Journal Has anyone ever teased you? How did it make you feel? Have you ever made fun of someone else? Write about your experiences.

Bullying

Bullying Bullying is when a person is picked on over and over again by an individual or group with more power (physical and/or social)

A bully might pick on someone because…….

2 main reasons why people are bullied: Appearance Social Status *Bullies pick on people that don’t fit in.

Types of Bullying 1. Verbal bullying is saying or writing mean things. Verbal bullying includes: Teasing Name-calling Inappropriate sexual comments Taunting Threatening to cause harm 2. Social bullying, involves hurting someone’s reputation or relationships. Social bullying includes: Leaving someone out on purpose Telling other children not to be friends with someone Spreading rumors about someone Embarrassing someone in public 3. Physical bullying involves hurting a person’s body or possessions. Physical bullying includes: Hitting/kicking/pinching Spitting Tripping/pushing Taking or breaking someone’s things Making mean or rude hand gestures

Victims of bullying can experience the following: Afraid to go to school Afraid to ride the bus Afraid to use the school bathroom Afraid of being alone in the school hallway The fear and anxiety caused by being a bullying victim can make it difficult to focus at school.

Bullying can cause victims to experience: Fear Depression Loneliness Anxiety Low self-esteem Physical illness Suicidal thoughts

Bullying Survival Tips: Ignore the bully & walk away Hold the anger (they like seeing people get angry) Don’t get physical Practice confidence (stay true to yourself by doing things you enjoy) Take charge of your life Talk about it (guidance counselor, teacher, friend, or parent)

Cyber Bullying

Cyber Bullying Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person. Cyberbullying also includes posting personal information or videos designed to hurt or embarrass someone else. cyber bullying news report

Protect yourself from Cyber Bullying: Walk away (from computer/turn phone off) Report to service provider (Facebook may block the bully from using the site) Block the bully Don’t respond Be safe online (password protect online sites/cell phones & change password often)
