David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 45/68 Demagnetize the item (3/3) All bound paper items have magnetic strips inserted in them which remain magnetically charged until they are checked out to a patron, in order to reduce theft of our collections Desensitizing or demagnetizing an item eliminates the magnetic charge on the magnetic strip, so that the exit alarm will not be activated when the item leaves the building !! However, if the charged item is an audio tape, CD/CD-ROM, computer disk, or other sensitive format, DO NOT demagnetize! Demagnetizing could damage the item. Simply hand that item to the patron

David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 46/68 Completing the processing Hand the item(s) to the patron, verbally reminding her/him when the item(s) is/are due Ask patron if s/he knows how to renew her/his books online via MountainLynx; if not, give her/him the Online Renewals information sheet If the exit alarm sounds when the patron is leaving the building, apologize to the patron and demagnetize all (non-sensitive) items again on the machine near exit Other items that the patron is carryingsuch as textbooks from the bookstore, cell phones, audio players, laptops, etc.may also set off the alarm Be sure to look and try to determine what set off the alarm; dont just sit there

David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 60/68 Proxy patrons Occasionally a patron will need to have recourse to a Proxy status for charging items One example would be an undergraduate student who is doing research under the supervision of a faculty member and needs semester loan privileges Another example would be a member of a federal agency or institution (such as NIOSH, NASA, etc.) who will be one of a number of proxy users under an Institutional Borrower patron record for that institution Only Circulation staff members are empowered to create a proxy status

David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 61/68 Proxy patrons (2/2) What a proxy status means is that a sponsor (a faculty member or an institutional borrower, for instance) can confer special lending privileges to a specified borrower The sponsor must complete and have certified a Proxy Card Authorization request from the Service Desk, by providing identifying information about those individuals who will borrow under that proxy status The faculty member or institutional borrower takes full responsibility for all items borrowed under the proxy status, including payment of fines, replacement costs, etc. Proxy statuses are usually assigned for a limited time period (e.g., a semester)
