Protein Synthesis Translation

A couple of things to remember about proteins!! Made of amino acids There are only 20 amino acids to make up a lot of proteins Proteins are a major component of cells Proteins are made in ribosomes

The genetic code …is universal. …is a correlation between the codon on mRNA and an amino acid …some amino acids have more than one codon …there are stop & start codons

Genetic code

Translation …process of making protein from information carried by mRNA. …occurs in the ribosome

Steps of Translation mRNA travels to the ribosome 2) tRNA attaches to each codon, the anticodon on tRNA must be complimentary to the codon!!!

3) The tRNA releases its amino acid 4) Each codon is “read” in order and tRNA continues to release amino acids, in order, to be bonded to the previous amino acids.
