Digging Down to Bedrock “That solid rock that underlies all soil, sand, and loose rock.” Introduction: Begin with a simple definition of “bedrock.” In terms of architecture, point out the value of bedrock in providing a firm foundation upon which to build a structure and the adverse consequences of the absence of bedrock.

Digging Down to Bedrock “47: Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock” (Luke 6). Slide two presents Jesus’ teaching showing the importance of bedrock in erecting a spiritual building and the adverse consequences of the absence of bedrock.

Digging Down to Bedrock “49: But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great” (Luke 6, cp. Matt. 7: 26, Luke 6: 46). Slide three stresses the serious deprivation of building on the moving and unstable sand.

Digging Down to Bedrock Christ – Rock (I Cor. 3: 11) Slide four depicts one exerting the necessary energy and focus to reach bedrock. Show how the teaching that man does not seriously participate in his salvation is false in the extreme (cp. Luke 13: 24). Point out how Jesus is said to be the Rock. Mention the context regarding I Corinthians 3: 11 (vs. 1-10).

Digging Down to Bedrock Modernism Opinions of men Do Own Thing Tradition Denominationalism The graphic of slide five depicts one only shoveling on the surface as opposed to digging down to bedrock. Modernism denies such truths as the virgin birth (Matt. 1: 20, 23); Jesus’ miracles (cp. John 11: 43-46); the inspiration of the scriptures (2 Tim. 3: 16, 17); and Jesus’ deity (Heb. 1: 8, 9). “Do Your Own Thing” is the doctrine of selfishness (Col. 2: 23). America is reaping the consequences of this doctrine that was aggressively first introduced in the sixties. The opinions of men become wrong when they binding and teaching what God’s word has not taught, rejecting what is taught (cp. Acts 26: 9). Denominationalism is built on the fleeting sand (cp. I Cor. 4: 17, Eph. 4: 4, 5, I Cor. 1: 10-13). The doctrines of men turn from the truth and frustrate God’s efforts to save man (Mark 7: 6, 7, Tit. 1: 13, 14). Human tradition characterizes much of the religious world and, again, defeats God’s plan (Matt. 15: 6, cp. 2 Thes. 3: 6). All of these matters will not last but shall suffer destruction. Doctrines of men

Digging Down to Bedrock Compare: Christ – Rock (I Cor. 3: 11) Emphasize once again Jesus being The Rock and then compare with building on the sand.
