10 years AFTER THE WAR IS OVER, some German POWS are just now making it home from Siberia. West Germany joins NATO and East Germany joins the Warsaw Pact. Many East Germans leave East Germany for the West. 1955

Wirtschaftswunder = Economic Miracle Wirtschaftswunder = Economic Miracle. To speed up rebuilding, West Germany invites thousands of “Gastarbeiter” into the country. The Federal State of Saarland joins Germany, leaving France. 1957

During the night of August 13, the East German government builds the Berlin Wall. No East Germans are allowed to leave the country for the next 29 years. 1961
