4. West Germany designs a “socialist” economy
West Germany designs a “socialist” economy. The rebuilding of Germany begins. East Germany designs a “communist economy” with “help” from Moscow.

5. June 17th, the East Germans rebel with protests against the communist government. Hunderds of thousands take to the streets. The protests are brutally put down.
1953

6. 10 years AFTER THE WAR IS OVER, some German POWS are just now making it home from Siberia. West Germany joins NATO and East Germany joins the Warsaw Pact. Many East Germans leave East Germany for the West.
1955

7. Wirtschaftswunder = Economic Miracle
Wirtschaftswunder = Economic Miracle. To speed up rebuilding, West Germany invites thousands of “Gastarbeiter” into the country. The Federal State of Saarland joins Germany, leaving France.
1957

8. During the night of August 13, the East German government builds the Berlin Wall. No East Germans are allowed to leave the country for the next 29 years.

Unrest is growing in East Germany. Under pressure, the East German government allows 35,000 of its citizens to leave the country.

The peaceful revolution begins. Thousands of East Germans celebrate in the streets. Almost 1 million citizens of East Germany want to leave. On December 22, 1989, the Brandenburger Gate opens!
