3. Condition after the War After the Second World War Germany and Berlin were partitioned by the allies into four military occupation zones. On 24th September 1949 the Western sector of Germany became the Federal Republic of Germany On 7th October 1949 the Eastern sector of Germany became the German Democratic Republic.

4. The Berlin wall The Berlin wall stood from 1961to 1989. The wall devided East from West Berlin. During the cold war it became the symbol of oppression and sorrow.

5. The Nato and Warsow Pact On 9th May 1955 the Federal Republic of Germany officially joined Nato for security purposes. As an answer to this step the Soviet Union signed the Warsaw Treaty on 14th May 1955.

6. Unification of East and West Germany On 31th August 1990 the two states signed the Reunification Treaty. On 3rd October 1990 the German Democratic Republic stopped its existence. The new reunited Germany was born.

7. European Union (EU) In 1957 Germany was already a member and a founding state of the European Union (EU) In 1990 West Germany was still a member of the EU without East Germany. Germany is the most populated state of the Member States.

8. Introduction of the Euro Till 1988 the Germany currency was the mark and in 2002 the Euro was adopted

9. In Our Days It is the 3rd largest economy in the world. The main industries are: car manufacturing, machine tools and chemicals and pharmaceutic. German products are world famous.
