About the Author… Paul Zindel Born in 1936 in Staten Island, New York Experienced a difficult childhood due to a dysfunctional family. Became a high school chemistry teacher in 1959. Quit his teaching job to begin writing. Zindel stated, “All of my novels begin with real, specific moments from my own life.” Everywhere in his work, readers can find reflections of Zindel’s childhood and adolescence.

Features of Zindel’s Writing Goal is to help young readers to stop feeling inferior. He wants his books to offer hope and to teach young people self-respect. Romance, mischief, and suspense are frequently found in his works.

Setting of The Pigman A frequent feature of Zindel’s work is a school setting. * He believes such an environment helps to create a realistic atmosphere * This realistic atmosphere helps readers to identify with the story. Staten Island, New York Late 1960s
