Preparing Seminar Questions

Level 1: Literal Literal questions are “fact questions” whose answers can be found right in the text. These questions are asked to figure out what’s happening. –Examples include: “Who is the main character?” “What happened in chapter 2?”

Level 2: Interpretive Interpretive questions are “meaning” questions whose answers you must figure out based on evidence from the text. These questions help you understand the feelings and actions of the characters and they explore the author’s views and attitudes. –Examples include: “How does the setting affect the story?” “What’s the significance of using this narrator?”

Level 3: Applied Applied questions are “real life” questions whose answers come from your own opinion and not from the text. These questions make you think about the book in relation to your own life and/or the real world. –Examples include: “Have you ever experienced something like this?” “Does this problem still exist today?”

Question Chains A question chain is a group with one literal, one interpretive, and one applied question that all build off of one another. Literal → Interpretive → Applied What is the setting of the story? How does this setting affect the story? Do places like this still exist today?
