CDP Scope ~ $12 Million for Network Infrastructure Upgrade and improve fault-tolerance of core network infrastructure Upgrade core and distribution layer routers Upgrade building entrance Etherswitches to 10/100/1000 Upgrade building uplinks to 1Gbps Add redundancy to core infrastructure Deploy blanket wireless coverage for all campuses Proliferate 802.11b/g access points in all buildings Deploy 802.11b/g coverage in all appropriate outdoor spaces Upgrade all connections on all campuses to switched Install fiber risers as needed Upgrade all concentrators to 10/100 or 10/100/1000 Etherswitches as appropriate Renovate telecomm rooms where necessary Upgrade Horizontal wiring Upgrade building uplink cabling where needed Upgrade of some building station cabling 11/28/2018
CDP Status as of Nov 1, 2004 Upgrade and improve fault-tolerance of core network infrastructure All core and distribution layer routers upgraded Building entrance Etherswitch upgrades in progress Redundancy added to Enterprise data center network Diverse-path border router site deployment underway 11/28/2018
CDP Status as of Nov 1, 2004 Upgrade all connections on all campuses to switched First few “easy” buildings upgraded Bad news: Summer work load caused delays in CDP work Good news: Applying CDP funds to upgrade equipment during customer projects when “legal” Additional resources dedicated to CDP project coordination Installation of fiber risers underway Renovation of telecomm rooms in progress as needed 11/28/2018
CDP Status as of Nov 1, 2004 Deploy blanket wireless coverage for all campuses Deployment of 802.11b/g access points underway for all buildings with adequate infrastructure Deployment of public wireless in downtown Tempe underway Deployment of 802.11b/g coverage in all appropriate outdoor spaces on ASU campuses will begin as soon as possible 11/28/2018

Goals for Wireless service Significantly expand wireless network coverage on all ASU campuses Provide wireless network “hot spots” covering downtown Tempe Improve security 11/28/2018
Downtown Tempe Public Wireless Coverage Status: Collaborating with the City of Tempe to deploy wireless network via ASU and City of Tempe-owned structures. Negotiating with other building owners to get access to install antennas on other structures Wireless network is treated as an external network Web access only VPN required to access ASU restricted resources Perfigo enforcing limitations for “guest” users of the public wireless network Development under way to add ability for guest users to VPN to their home businesses Meeting with other wireless vendors to reduce interference issues in downtown Tempe 11/28/2018
Downtown Tempe Public Wireless Coverage 11/28/2018
Common Wireless Issues No coverage available http://asu.edu/wireless Interference by “rogue” AP’s or other systems Poor quality wireless card Limited configuration options Weak transmit signal Improperly configured wireless client No profile defined for the ASU service Client configured to “hang on” to AP until completely unreachable 11/28/2018
