1 Yale University Ivy+ 2008 Update
David Galassi Jeff Euben (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

2 New West Campus 136 acre facility West Haven and Orange CT
8 miles from central campus 1.6M sq ft of space 20 buildings includes 550,000 sq ft of lab space Will be base to up to 3000 people Purchased from Bayer 9/25/07 1st “occupant” 5/1/08 (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

3 New West Campus (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

4 New West Campus 2 diverse 72 pair fiber runs from New Haven central campus Supplemental intra campus fiber Onsite Data Center 10 GB closet to backbone Designed for high availability Green field VOIP (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

5 Wireless Project Original Wireless Strategy 2001:
We would supply wireless access to public spaces upon request and departments would fund wireless deployments in dedicated space Technology based on Cisco (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

6 Wireless Project 2007 project approved and funded by Provost to provide 100% campus coverage 2 year implementation started July ~4000 aps Current status ~30% completed ~1300 aps Based upon Aruba Technology and Airwave management Investigating migration strategies to n (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

7 VOIP Background and Drivers
Significant amount of campus construction and renovation providing green field opportunities. Multiyear open source never got out of lab Successful pilot with Cisco UCM 6.x Timing of West Campus driving us to make decision to invest more in TDM or migrate to production VOIP (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

8 VOIP Decision to move forward with CUCM with existing Nupoint VM
1st large scale production use in renovated 700 person ITS/Finance and Administration building go-live 10/08 ~5000 potential voip sets identified over next 5 years (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

9 VOIP VOIP at Yale is at least two Projects Technology:
How big is the IP-PBX ie. servers? How fast does the network need to be? How do we integrate it with existing systems? How do we make it highly availably? Business Process How do we install this new service? How do we move this services? How do we trouble shoot problems? How do we bill for our services? (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

10 VOIP Interesting Challenges:
The phones must remain active for xx minutes during a power failure. Power for phones now comes from network closet rather than central telephone switch room. How can I provide emergency power in every network closet? The quality of the phone call can not be affected by other network conditions Voice and Data are now running on one converged network. How can I ensure the voice traffic is given the appropriate priority level on the network? (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

11 VOIP Interesting Challenges:
Every physical phone has a unique identifier that is administratively tied to a phone number/person. Traditional phones are administratively tied to a cable pair/location. Current phone add process Need to define and optimize new process (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

12 VOIP Interesting Challenges:
Required by law to provide phone location for purpose of emergency calls. E911 services are currently managed by manually maintaining a database that maps phone numbers to locations. Current process requires a technician to move phone and also allows for E911 database maintenance. Need to define and optimize new process or technical solution. (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

13 VOIP Rethinking the Edge Currently using HP Procurve at edge
10gb to the closet High density POE Traffic Management Edge Security: Positioned for NAC Switch and Device communications (ie. CDP) Fine power management Location based services Emerging open alternatives: LLDP-MED (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

14 Backbone Network Upgrade
Today’s Backbone Composed of Cisco 65xx series Catalyst Switches running at Layer 2. Older switches with only 64mbps backplane 1 Gbps connections to campus routers and internet gateways. Design provides only manual failover for link failures Firewalls are externally connected with maximum total throughput of 330Mbps-1.7Gbps (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

15 Backbone Network Upgrade
Future Backbone Meeting with stakeholders to define requirements and Investigating Alternatives General themes in requirements Faster: More Bandwidth Higher Availability Integrated Security Evaluating HP and Cisco designs (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

16 Backbone Network Upgrade
Future Backbone Sample Potential Design Cisco 65xx series Catalyst Switches running at Layer 3. 10Gbps connections to campus routers and internet gateways. Design provides only automatic failover for link failures Firewalls are could be imbedded with maximum total throughput of at least 5Gbps (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

17 Others Implementation of ConnectED for voice/ /SMS: Students required to provide cell phone details. Discontinue expansion of internally managed Reverse 911 solution RFP to potentially outsource ACD/IDVR services Retirement of Student Switch. Dial tone enabled on central campus Nortel TDM switch (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved

18 Others Exchange Migration for calendaring users this summer
Focus on ITIL and implementing formal Change Management, Incident Management and tool HP service center Data Center Move: 1 of 3 exiting DC’s needs to be relocated due to building demolition Data Center Expansion Strategy. Demand for significant HPC exceeding current capabilities (c) 2008 Yale University Information Technology Services -- All Rights Reserved
