What do Governments Do? & Types of Governments Unit 1

A government is the ruling authority for a community or society A government is the ruling authority for a community or society. A government has the power to make, enforce and carry out laws.

Popular Sovereignty Popular Sovereignty is the belief that government is created by the people and subject to the will of the people.

Functions of Government Keep Order Pass and enforce laws Establish courts Provide Security Prevent crime Protect citizens from foreign attack

Functions of Government continued… Provide services Libraries, schools, hospitals, parks, water, utilities Guide the community Manage the economy (create a budget) Conduct foreign relations

Public Policy Public Policy is a plan of government action to achieve community goals Important- it affects the citizens and the people of a community

Budget A Budget is a plan for collecting & spending money Spending money on the correct things is a key to the success of a community

Levels of Government National Government State Government Local Government

Types of Governments Take 5 to 10 minutes to fill out the chart. We will then review together.
