What is Civics??? -Civics -Study of Citizenship and Government -Citizen: community member who owes loyalty to the Government and are entitled to protection from it -Government: Ruling Authority over a community or society They make, carryout, enforce, and carryout laws and decisions

3 The Common Good --The ultimate role of the government is to do the greatest good to the greatest number of people without harming others

4 Why We Need Gov’t? -Make laws: Prevent Crime, protects citizens, -Keep Order: Establish Courts, pass and enforce traffic laws, -Provide Services: libraries, schools, water, sanitation hospitals, parks -Prevent anarchy -the absence of any form of government

Levels of Government -National: Entire country 3 Branches of Government Highest level over citizens Level that provides framework for citizenship -State: Decides matters only for people in the state!! NC Government looks very similar to Federal Government because it has 3 branches as well! -Local: Closest to each of us County/City: Can’t take action out against laws of state or Fed. Gov’t!

8 Levels of Government -Federalism: when power is divided between the States and the Federal Government. Notice the powers that are divided up between the Fed. Gov’t and the States! Concurrent powers are shared between the two!! Delegated Powers: are for the Fed. Gov’t Reserved Powers are for the State

Fed and states gov’t

10 Democracy -republics-- rule by the consent of the people -democracy -direct democracy-a form of government where each citizens has an actual say in the affairs of government -representative democracy-a form of government where citizens elect representatives to make decisions for them

12 Monarchy -monarchy- -form of government led by a king or a queen Examples? -absolute monarchy: up until 1600s- this is what most gov’ts were. Unlimited power to rule as they wished! -limited monarchy: power was limited by the countries constitution or law… example: England

13 Socialist -socialist- Type of government where individuals and government share ownership in major businesses and government takes on a greater role in citizen’s lives.

14 Communist -communist- Type of government where the government owns and controls all aspects of life for its citizens

15 Authoritarian -dictatorship-Type of government that is usually controlled by one person who allows very little freedom or opposition -totalitarianism-Form of government where little freedom or opposition is allowed -oligarchy-Government that is ruled by a small group of people

16 Religious -theocracy- Type of government that is ruled by religious leaders
