Pre-Registration Workshop PCPS Advising Please sign in as you come in!

Getting Set Up Materials you will need: Laptop Computer CAPP Sheet (recommended) Scheduling Grid (Picked up when you came in) Pencil with eraser

Objective and Agenda At the end of this workshop you should feel more confident in… Understanding your degree requirements Identifying when you could/should take each required course Registering yourself for courses on November 16th You will also understand the how to meet with an advisor one-on-one to review your proposed schedule.

CAPP Sheet versus Scheduling Grid Shows how AP/Transfer credits count towards your degree CAPP Sheet Summarizes degree requirements listed in Catalog (rulebook). Populates courses which you register for and complete along with grade. Updated automatically and end of each term. Official University Document How can you find the CAPP on the my.scranton.edu portal? Scheduling Grid Lists the order of courses which a generic student would take to complete their degree Does not update automatically (need to manually cross off courses as you complete them) Can theoretically plan all 4 years Unofficial University Document How can you find a scheduling grid on www.scranton.edu?

So which should you use? First Year Senior Scheduling Grid CAPP As freshman it is actually easier to use the scheduling grid since you haven’t taken many courses yet. As you get closer to graduation, you will want to make sure that you are satisfying your remaining degree requirements by using your CAPP.

How to use the Scheduling Grid Cross off the courses which you have already satisfied or are currently taking.

How to use the Scheduling Grid Tip: Use your CAPP to determine which requirements are filled (AP/Transfer credit can sometimes count as gen ed, major , or free elective).

How to use the Scheduling Grid Circle/highlight those course which the grid states you should be taking now or should have already taken. Doing this assures that you don’t forget any requirements.

How to use the Scheduling Grid Write in the courses and corresponding credits which you should be taking for each of the subsequent semesters (use pencil!) START WITH MAJOR/COGNATE COURSES! When finished you can move onto the second year grid and repeat.

Course Search (Is my course even offered?) Navigate to www.scranton.edu In top right search box, type course schedule search Click on the top link “Course Schedule Search”

Course Search (Is my course even offered?) Narrow your search by either course subject or course attribute Subject Example: EXSC Attribute Example: (E) Natural Science

Course Search (Is my course even offered?) Key Columns: CRN: Number you need to register for course Section: Important for Cross-registration Days and Time: Make sure there are no overlapping courses or you won’t be able to add them.

Important Note Cross-Registration! Those who need to take BIOL 111/111L, BIOL 142/142L, CHEM 111, CHEM 113/113L or WRTG 106 in the spring: You are only able to sign up for one specific section That section will be the same number as the course you are taking this term Example: If I am currently in BIOL 110 Section 3, which CRN and time do I have to take BIOL 111?

What if I still need more help? Beginning on October 25th, you will need to sign up for a one-on-one appointment with an advisor in MGH 111. Meetings begin November 5th and last through registration on November 16th. At this meeting you will: Get your PIN in order to register on the 16th. Find out the time which you will be able to register for courses (i.e. 3:00PM, 3:15PPM, etc.) Discuss issues you have with your potential schedule. Identify back up courses in case your first choice is filled/cancelled.

Final Tips Understand what courses are set in place and which can be moved around Have back ups in place for registration day in case your top choice is filled or restricted Balance: means an appropriate number of credits and different types of courses Work with your advisor to answer any questions you have!
