South Christian Elementary Library / Media Center South Christian Elementary

I can define library vocabulary words.

A place that holds books, music, magazines, and more for people to borrow and enjoy. Talk about a library and that the library is a place that has many materials such as books, magazines and more that people can borrow for a short period of time. Library

Pages of paper put together with words written on them that a person can read. Talk about what a book is. Made of paper, people read the words on the pages. Book

Author Writes the words in a story. Talk about the author as the person that writes the words in the book. Sometimes the words are made up stories and sometimes the words are about real things with information someone might want to know, Author

Illustrator Draws the pictures in a story. Talk about the author as the person that writes the words in the book. Sometimes the words are made up stories and sometimes the words are about real things with information someone might want to know, Illustrator

Setting Where the story takes place. Discuss the setting as the place where a story takes place. Setting

Character A person, animal, or creature in the story. Discuss that characters are who the story is about. Characters can be people, animals or creatures. Character

A type of writing that is made up by the author’s imagination. Discuss fiction as made up sotries. Not real, imaginary and completely the author’s imagination and can sometimes seem real. Fiction

A list in alphabetical order which tells the reader where a subject can be found. Discuss and index in a book. It is almost always at the back of the book, topics are listed in alphabetical order and tells us the page number where the writing about it can be found in that book. Index

A registry of items found in a library. Talk about the catalog or as some in the past called it the “card catalog”. In our library here at South Christian it is called the Researcher and it is onlineand can be accessed at the “other” computer at the circulation desk for students to use. Catalog

To extend the period of loan of a library item. Discuss the option of re-checking out a book if the user is not finished with the book. That is called Renew. It allows us to keep the same book a bit longer. Renew

Past the assigned due date that a item should be returned to the library. Students have two weeks to look at a book when they check it out. If the borrowed book is not returned by the end of the two week check out time period the book is late bing returned of overdue. Overdue

Word Search Activity Write your name. Write today’s date. Find the words from the word bank and circle them. Distribute the word search activity and read the directions to them from the powerpoint.

Ticket out the door Circle YES or NO to answer the question. Hand the paper to your teacher. Have a great day! Allow them to check out books. Pass out their exit ticket collect the completed exit tickets as they line up at the door.
