1 Welcome to your Sabre Library Media Center! Ms. Genco, Media Specialist

2 Please note!  There is a scavenger hunt/study guide activity that goes with this presentation.  Pay close attention to the terms written in orange. Work on this activity as I present the information for it to you!  Library Science Students: the content of this presentation will “feed” your midterm exam.

3 Library Policies  Students can take out up to 4 books  Loan period is two weeks  Books can be taken out again or renewed for another two weeks provided that there is not a request or hold for the book(s) you have  Book are returned into the slot at the circulation desk or in the box outside the library doors.

4 Library Policies Continued  Regular printing is only permitted for school-related work and is free. You need to check with Ms. Genco before printing.  Computers are for educational purposes only not recreational gaming. This is in keeping with the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) of the CMS.

5 Your OPAC – Online Public Access Catalog is called Horizon Information Portal  Click on Startup  Then click on Programs  Click on Horizon Information Portal  Horizon Information Portal Horizon Information Portal

6 Call Number  Is the “address” for the book  See the signs to help you find the address

7 Library Geography, or How Do I Find a Book?  The sections or “streets” of the library  Reference - call number starts with R – these book are for looking up small bits of information.  Biographies – call number starts with B. Books listed in this section are organized by the person for whom the book is written  Collected Biographies – call number starts with 920  Non-Fiction – call numbers are in 10 one hundreds sections (000, 100, 200 – 900)  Fiction – call number starts with F  Story Collections – call number starts with SC  Periodicals – a/k/a magazines

8 What about E-Books?  E-Books are often listed in your OPAC search results  Here’s an example:  Username: folk  Pasword: sabre

9 Know One Know Them All  All public libraries are organized this way  So whether you are at South Meck or at the South County branch of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public library if you know your way around one, you know your way around all of them  Knowledge is power!

10 Databases  In addition to books, of course you can find information on the Internet  Yet if you go to Google or Bing, you can’t be sure if the author of a particular website is an expert  That’s where databases come in

11 What are Databases?  Databases are any information that is gathered to be accessed on a computer  But the key to our databases is that the authors and the people responsible for putting the information together are experts  The experts are making sure that you have the best and most accurate up-to- date information.

13 And if you must use Google….  Remember the following  Websites that end in with the suffix or ending.com are for commercial purposes and are in the business of making selling something and salespeople are known to alter ideas in order to make a sale .edu – originates from a college or university – check the expertise of the author

14 And if you must use Bing…. a.gov website suffix is from a government agency a.org website suffix is from a non- profit organization (Be aware of the mission and bias of the organization when deciding whether or not to use the information from their website.)
