TOPIC: Cells AIM: What is cellular respiration?

Glucose is broken down to make ENERGY (ATP) Occurs in mitochondria What is respiration?

Oxygen (O2) required to make energy Aerobic Respiration Oxygen (O2) required to make energy

Oxygen Carbon dioxide & water vapor

+ Glucose Oxygen + + Energy Carbon Dioxide Water

AEROBIC RESPIRATION WASTES C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2O + 36ATP GLUCOSE + OXYGEN  CARBON + WATER + ENERGY DIOXIDE WASTES (breathe out)

Anaerobic Respiration Energy produced WITHOUT oxygen FERMENTATION

2 types: 1. ALCOHOLIC FERMENTATION = In yeast cells

C6H12O6alcohol+ CO2+2ATP

2. LACTIC ACID FERMENTATION = In your muscles, when oxygen is not available

C6H12O6  lactic acid + 2ATP

ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION 1. Alcoholic Fermentation C6H12O6alcohol+ CO2+2ATP 2. Lactic Acid Fermentation C6H12O6lactic acid + CO2+2ATP

Which produces more energy? AEROBIC = 36 ATP Anaerobic = 2 ATP

YES bc they have mitochondria (carry out respiration) Do plants carry out respiration? YES bc they have mitochondria (carry out respiration) They need energy too!!!! Carry out photosynthesis & respiration
