POP BOTTLE COMPLETE FLOWER PROJECT Presented by: Bob Brown

COMPLETE FLOWER

Pop Bottles You will need a clear 1 liter plastic pop bottle and a green 1 liter plastic pop bottle of the same brand.

Removing Labels Fill the bottles with hot water and leave sit for a couple of minutes. Then slowly remove the label. This process will remove most of the glue.

Clean off excess glue Use a glue remover that will not be toxic to the students. I used a citrus base glue remover that washes off with water and is not harmful.

Producing a pattern The flat area of a bottle measures 10 inches by 3 ½ inches. I used 8 petals or sepals so the pattern would be rectangles of 1 1/4” x 3 1/2”.

Petal Pattern Now in each rectangular box you are to draw a pattern of your petal. Remember that the base of the petal must stay attached to the bottle.

Sepal Pattern The sepal pattern may be the same or you may change it.

Pattern Transfer Cut out the patterns and tape them to the correct bottle. Petals on the clear bottle and sepals on the green bottle. Use a non-permanent pen to mark the patterns.

Cut Out of Pattern from Bottle Remove the water, don’t rub off the pattern marks. Use a knife to open a spot on the bottle where scissors can be inserted to cut out the pattern.

Color the Petals Use a permanent marker to color the petals on the clear bottle. Color both sides for a deeper color pattern. Do not color the rest of the bottle. Cut off the clear bottle neck.

Pistil You are ready to make the pistil parts; stigma, style and ovary. The stigma is a small bead, the style a colored pipe cleaner and the ovary a pom-pom.

Stamens The stamens are a colored bead for the anther and a pipe cleaner for the filament. You should make four of these to look the same.

Reproductive Assembly In the center of the green bottle cap, apply a generous amount of hot glue. Place the four stamens in a + pattern in the center of the cap. Place the pistil on top of these. Hold until secure.

Complete Parts of Flower You have now produced all of the parts necessary to assemble your flower.

Assembly Take the clear petal bottle and insert it into the inside of the green sepal bottle. Align them how you want them to appear and then snap them together. Put on cap.
