Flower Scientific Model Art 4th Grade April Art Project West Mercer Elementary Art Enrichment Program

Lesson Overview 1 Lesson: paper sculpture Time:75 minutes Volunteers: 4 Medium: paper and pipe clenaers Curriculum connection: flowers Project Overview/Skills – Students will build a model of a flower using paper and pipe cleaners and gain a better understanding of how a flower reproduces. Ties in directly with science unit. – To be given as a Mother’s Day gift – Vocabulary Parts of a flower

Parts of a Flower Materials Needed Cardstock- 8 ½ x 11 sheets, per student – Green- 2 – Dark color- 4 sheets (such as dark purple) – Medium color 4 (such as purple) – Light color- 1 (such as lavender) Pipe cleaners- green x1 and yellow x4 Pompoms- 1 per student Scissors Tape Double sided tape Leaf and petal templates Wire cutters for pipe cleaners Flower shape die cuts x 4 per student in white ( die cut machine in teacher workroom) Prep ahead of time Chip board- 7.5 inch circle Nails- to puncture holes Photo copy template pattern on to variety of colors- 1 copy will be given to each child and they will use this to trace duplicates – There is a different template for each size of petal Leaf Bit = darker shades Medium = medium shades Small = light shades Tiny = white (half page per child)

Display Once the project is finished, student work should be mounted on colored paper and displayed either in the classroom or in the designated area in the hallway. If there are some who have not finished, please check with the teacher on how they would like to proceed. Do not assume that it ok to continue the project after the allotted time.

Today’s Project Make a scientifically correct paper model of a flower

Parts of a flower Petals and leaves (paper) Pistil and stamen (pipe cleaners) Ovary (pom pom)

Step 1 – Cut out chipboard base Trace template onto chipboard Cut it out Puncture holes with a nail – near the top (so it can be hung up) – 2 holes in the center (so that the pistil can attach) – 8 holes around the center holes (for the stamens)

Step 2 – Cutting out petals and leaves There are 5 different shapes to cut out – Leaves (x2) in green – Big petal (x8) in darker shade – Medium petal (x8) in medium shade – Small petals (x4) in light shade – Tiny petals (x4) in white Cut 1” into bottom of both large size petals and leaves

Step 3 – Cutting out leaves Leaves (x2) in green Cut 1” into bottom of the leaves Overlap ends of cut and hold with double stick tape The bigger the overlap, the more the petal will sit upright 1/4 th of an inch is about right

Step 4 – Cutting big petals 8 big petals in darker color – Cut out petals from template sheet- use this to trace patterns on 3 other sheets – Trace all at once, then cut out all at once Cut 1” into bottom of the petals Overlap ends of cut and hold with double stick tape The bigger the overlap, the more the petal will sit upright 1/4 th of an inch is about right

Step 5 – Cutting medium petals 8 medium petals in medium shade color – Cut out template shapes and use for other pages – Trace all at once, then cut out all at once Cut 1” into bottom of petal and tape overlap 1/4”

Step 6 – Cutting small petals 4 small size petals in light shade Tape cut at bottom

Step 7 – Taping down outside petals Place about 1” in from edge of base and tape (with normal tape) to the base Flat bottom of each petal should be supported by the base Start with 4 at cardinal directions to get spacing. Then fill in between. Adjust as necessary so all 8 fit

Step 8 – Taping medium petals Tape to base about 1” from edge of big leaves Start with 4 cardinal directions, then fill in between

Step 9 – lighter petals Tape 1” from edge of medium petals, right to edge of circle of holes for stamen

Step 10 - Stamen Yellow pipe cleaners x4 Thread them through neighboring holes and twist once to secure fold down the tops to represent the pollen

Step 11 – Pistil Green pipe cleaner Thread it through center 2 holes Twist once Put in one pompom to represent the ovary Twist many times, holding ovary in place Fold down the tops to form the stigma

Step 12 – cover up tape petals Use tiny white petals and double stick tape to fill in center gap and cover up any visible tape
