OVERVIEW OF ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR

SUMMARY OF LECTURE Definition Of Organizational Theory And Behavior The Importance Of Organizational Behavior In Organizations Concepts Of Organizational Behavior Roots Of Organizational Behavior Contrast Between Management And Organizational Behavior

WHAT IS ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR? In order to understand what organizational behavior is, we need to define the two components of organization and behavior. Organization A consciously coordinated social unit, made up of a group of people, that functions on a relatively continuous basis to achieve common goals.

WHAT IS ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR? CONT’D Behavior: Refers to what people do in the organization, how they perform, and what their attitudes are.

DEFINING ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR A field of study that investigates the impact of individuals, groups, and structure on behavior within organizations; the aim is to apply such knowledge toward improving organizational effectiveness. OB is frequently applied to address workplace issues such as absenteeism, turnover, productivity, motivation, working in groups, and job satisfaction. managers often apply the knowledge gained from OB research to help them manage their organizations more effectively

CONCEPTS OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR(OB) OB is an applied behavioral science that is built upon contributions from a number of behavioral disciplines. The main areas are psychology, sociology, social psychology, anthropology, and political science. As we will learn, psychology’s contributions have been mainly at the individual or micro-level of analysis. The other four disciplines have contributed to our understanding of macro concepts, such as group processes and organization.

The Importance Of Organizational Behavior In Organizations Organizational behavior is also about managing people in work places. Surveys have shown that managing people well may lead to greater Organizational Commitment, that is the degree to which an employee identifies with the organization and wishes to remain with the organization. Managing well may improve Organization Citizenship Behavior which is discretionary behavior that is not part of an employee’s formal job requirements, but that nevertheless promotes the effective functioning of the organization.

Management And Organizational Behavior OB considers three levels of analysis The individual The group and The organization Which, when combined, help us understand behavior in organizations.

The Individual Level At the Individual Level managers encounter employees who have different characteristics therefore issues to do with job satisfaction, motivation, empowerment and ethics, among others, are part of the issues managers have to deal with.

The Group Level At the Group Level employees are expected to work in teams, therefore the need for good inter-personal skills as team members may come from different back grounds.

The Organization Level At Organization level managers have to deal with challenges of productivity, developing effective employees and competition
