Presentation transcript:

What is the equation for cellular respiration? Due Now: None DO NOW: What is the equation for cellular respiration? Where does it take place? True or False: Only animals use cellular respiration

Why? Glucose ATP The Cell

So: cells use sugar and oxygen to make carbon dioxide and water 6H2O 6CO2 C6H12O6 + ATP So: cells use sugar and oxygen to make carbon dioxide and water BUT… Oxygen is not actually necessary. It only makes the whole process more efficient

There are actually two types of respiration… Aerobic respiration: respiration WITH oxygen Anaerobic respiration: respiration without oxygen

Aerobic Respiration Respiration WITH oxygen Aerobic respiration produces 36 ATP (LOTS of energy) Occurs in the mitochondria

Anaerobic Respiration Also known as fermentation Respiration WITHOUT oxygen Anaerobic respiration produces only 2 ATP (Little energy) Occurs in the cytoplasm

Identify the type of respiration Aerobic or anaerobic?

Identify the type of respiration Aerobic or anaerobic?

Which do you think is more beneficial? Aerobic respiration or Anaerobic respiration?

Cellular respiration occurs in three steps Step 1: Glycolysis If oxygen: Step 2: Krebs Cycle, Step 3: Electron Transport Chain

Who can do the most pushups in this class? Why do your muscles burn when you exercise?

In humans Anaerobic respiration is known as lactic acid fermentation. Lactic acid causes the burn

In yeast Anaerobic respiration is know as Alcohol fermentation: produces alcohol

Is Chris going through aerobic or anaerobic respiration?

Is Chris going through lactic acid or alcohol fermentation?

Venn Diagram Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Respiration What do they have in common? What do they both make? What do they both require? Which step do they have in common? What is different? How much ATP does each make? Where does each take place? What are the two types of fermentation? What are the stages in aerobic respiration that are different from anaerobic?

Exit Ticket What does aerobic mean? What does anaerobic mean? Which type of respirations generates more ATP?

Exit Ticket 4. Aerobic respiration involves all of the following except a. glycolysis. b. the Krebs cycle. c. mitochondria d. lactic acid fermentation
