1 There are 2 different types...
Cellular Respiration There are 2 different types... Aerobic = using oxygen Anaerobic = not using oxygen

2 There are 2 types of cellular respiration. Aerobic vs. Anaerobic
Anaerobic respiration (without air) – does not use oxygen, it only makes 2 ATP at a time and creates extra waste products. Aerobic respiration – uses oxygen and creates 36 ATP molecules at a time.

3 Anaerobic Respiration = No oxygen = Fermentation
Alcohol fermentation – Glucose without oxygen produces 2 ATP, alcohol & CO2 & water. Lactic acid fermentation – Glucose without oxygen produces 2 ATP, lactic acid, CO2 and water.

4 ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION
Uses Oxygen Produces 36 ATP per cycle Occurs in the mitochondria Is the “norm” for human being cells. Only produces the waste products of CO2 and H2O Does NOT use oxygen Produces only 2 ATP per cycle Occurs in the cytoplasm Occurs during strenuous exercise in humans. Produces lactic acid/alcohol in addition to CO2 and H2O. BOTH Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration use glucose make ATP produce CO2 and H2O

6 Compare and Contrast the two types of Cellular Respiration

7 Critical Thinking Question
Why do you feel the burning sensation in your muscle during rigorous physical activity? Your answer should reference/include the breaking down of glucose without oxygen. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
