1 Unit 3: Cells How do the processes of Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis cycle nutrients?
Cellular respiration is the breakdown of organic molecules, occurs in the mitochondria of cells. Used to form ATP(energy) Energy is released when the bond breaks

2 The equation for cellular respiration is:
Cellular Respiration occurs in the mitochondria of cells and produces about 34 ATP molecules! The equation for cellular respiration is: Reactants Products Oxygen + Glucose(food) = Carbon dioxide +WATER + ENERGY O C6H12O = CO H2O ATP

3 Cellular Respiration Process:
Glycolysis= 1st step to break down of glucose; occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell; does NOT require oxygen.**ALL living things do this!! (get 2 ATP from process)

4 Anaerobic respiration
If oxygen is NOT present (anaerobic) after glycolysis, fermentation can occur : Types of Fermentation 1. Lactic Acid Fermentation-lactic acid produced in animal cells. Lactic acid builds up in muscles Could cause pain and cramping 2. Alcohol Fermentation (occurs in bacteria and yeast) Ethanol produced see this in brewing beer and making bread

5 2. Aerobic Respiration- 1. All living things do this!
All living things do this WITH Oxygen AND mitochondria!! Makes the MOST ATP!! 2. All living things do this WITHOUT Oxygen!!

6 Summary of Cellular Respiration
What’s produced: 2 ATP from 1. glycolysis 2 ATP, Carbon dioxide and NADH and FADH (carrier molecules)- from 3. Krebs Cycle 32-34 ATP and water- from 4. Electron Transport chain

7 Photosynthesis The chloroplast is the organelle where photosynthesis happens! Inside the chloroplast, the green pigment, chlorophyll traps and absorbs the energy from sunlight.

8 Photosynthesis The equation for Photosynthesis is:
Carbon dioxide +WATER + light energy = Oxygen +Glucose(food) CO H2O sun = O C6H12O6
