Thursday 5/25/17 Notebook Entry: “NASA is developing the capabilities needed to send humans to an asteroid by 2025 and Mars in the 2030s. Engineers and scientists around the country are working hard to develop the technologies astronauts will use to one day live and work on Mars, and safely return home from the next giant leap for humanity.” NASA’s Journey to Mars, 9/2015 Would you want to be an astronaut that travels to Mars for the first time? Why or why not?

What do humans need to survive? Air Personal Space? Water Interaction with others? Food Sanitation? Shelter Sleep

Identify the Problem You are a space engineer. You want to model a base in which people could live and work on Mars. What problems do you think you’ll encounter?

Planets for Human Settlement Planet A could not support human life for an extended period of time. Its gravity is too great. Planet B might be able to support human life. Its mass is over 0.4 times that of Earth, so it might have water and an atmosphere. Its length of day is 2.5 times that of Earth. Its gravity is slightly less than Earth’s, so humans wouldn’t be harmed. Planet C could not support human life for long. Its day is too long. Even though its day is only slightly longer than Earth’s, Mars could not support human life because it is too small to have a sufficient thick atmosphere or enough surface water. Changing orbit position would not change these things.

In both views you must label main features of the base by name and number. On a piece of lined paper describe each feature of your base. Include the number and label you gave each feature on your drawing. Describe each feature to explain how it solves a problem with living on Mars.
