1 Friday 9/15/17 Notebook Entry: Think about how your group worked together to design and build your boat. What do you think went well? What do you think could have been done better?

2 Remember the Big Question
How do scientists work together to solve problems?

3 Present your first design to the class.
Answer these questions in your presentation How did you construct your boat? Why did you choose that design? How did the constraints affect your design? What things did you think about and try before choosing this design? Class: Does the presented boat meet the criteria?

4 Reflect on your design again…
Discuss with your group things that you learned by watching presentations from other groups. Are there new ideas you would incorporate if you could design a new boat?

5 Build a Boat Part 1 - Reflection
Complete the following questions on a piece of paper. You will turn this in so give it a heading (name, date, class period) Draw and label a sketch of your group’s boat. What criteria does your design meet? What qualities makes your boat a good design? What are the problems with your current design. What did you learn from other groups that will help you with another design.

6 Do you understand the problem better now?
Sometimes, just making a first, simple try at solving the problem gives you a better understanding of the task at hand. Let’s update our list of criteria and constraints. Would you like to build a new boat with an updated design?

7 ITERATION Iteration is a repeated attempt to improve a process or product.

8 Build a Better Boat In your spiral sketch an idea for your 2nd iteration of the boat. Keep in mind our updated list of criteria and constraints. Share your sketch with your group members. Spend time discussing everyone’s sketch and choose one boat for the group to build. Turn your Boat Records sheet over to the other side. Put your name and today’s date. Sketch the group’s boat design in the first box of the Boat Records sheet. Build, Test and Record results of the boat.
