What are the consequences of crop expansion in terms of returns to farmers?

What are the consequences of crop expansion in terms of returns to farmers? flood mitigation carbon sequestration and habitat for biodiversity?

Where can we place protected areas or other conservation actions to maximize biodiversity ?

Where can we place protected areas or other conservation actions to maximize biodiversity as well as water purification pollination and tourism?

Ecosystems provide a wide array of goods and services Ecosystem Services Ecosystems provide a wide array of goods and services of value to people Two major distinctions here. 1) multiple values, 2) benefits to people. Fundamentally an anthropocentric framework. What is in it for us? Another key focus: long-term. 8

Dream- for any given action, suite of changes to ecosystem and the impacts on human well-being.

The overall framework that my research contributes to is this presented in Daily et al. 2009. In which ecosystem service values are incorporated into decision-making, ultimately leading to more informed decisions. As Daily and collegues describe in this paper, we have come along way in the science of linking ecosystems, services, and values, but more is needed. My research attempts to fill an important gap in our ability to establish these linkages for a set of services related to water quality. Daily et al. FEE 2009
