Math Within the content of Everyday Mathematics, emphasis is placed on: A problem-solving approach based on everyday situations that develops critical thinking Frequent practice of basic skills through ongoing program routines and mathematical games An instructional approach that visits topics regularly to ensure full concept development Activities that explore and offer opportunities for students to apply their basic fact skills to geometry, measurement, and algebra Math calendar

MATH FACTS PRACTICE *Addition and Subtraction within 10* 1st Trimester 2nd Trimester 3rd Trimester Knows +/- 0 and 1. Knows sums of 10. ·  Knows +/- 0 and 1. ·   Knows +/- sums of 10. Knows +/- doubles facts. Knows all addition and subtraction facts within 10. Math facts will be taught through direct instruction to help your child memorize his/her facts Fact introduction and practice will be at school As facts are introduced you will be asked to create fact cards on 3x5 index cards and add them to baggie that will hold your child’s facts Facts must be practiced at home on a nightly basis, fact baggies should remain at home to avoid getting lost! Facts will be sorted into two categories: “got it” and “not yet”

“GOT IT” FACTS Got It Facts need to be automatic Your child should be able to answer a math fact question as fast as they can answer the question “What is your name?”

“NOT YET” FACTS Not Yet facts are facts that are answered incorrectly, or answered correctly but your child needs to use their fingers, count in his head, etc. All new fact cards that are created should be initially placed in the “not yet” category It will be up to you to determine when the fact can be moved from the “not yet” to the “got it” baggie

Report Cards are sent home 3X Per School Year (December, March, June) Always remember that expectations change EACH trimester which can cause a change in any grade

Birthday Celebrations We celebrate birthdays in 1st grade! Let teacher know if/when you plan to send in birthday treats for the class Check with Mrs. Mikolajczyk for allergy information Summer birthdays will be celebrated at the end of the school year

Our Class Moms They will help organize all classroom parties/events Megan Pelino-Whalen and Kirsten Ward They will be calling on the families to volunteer to bring in items for various events Please make sure to put your current email address on the parent email list that is coming around so that we can easily contact you!
