Vocabulary Memorial (The Vietnam Memorial was built in honor of soldiers who died during the Vietnam War.) Poetic- (adjective) In honor of (The city was named in honor of George Washington.) To renovate (The building was old and didn’t have enough space, so they renovated it.) To house (This building houses the nation’s largest collection of art.) To be named for= to be named in honor of election (noun), to hold elections (e.g. Presidential elections are held every four years.) To take office= to begin working in a political position Term (The presidential term lasts 4 years.) To take an oath (During the inauguration ceremony the president takes an oath to serve his country. )

Washington D.C. Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States. It was named in honor of the first president of the United States, George Washington. It is a special district and is not located in any state. The district is named “Columbia” because it is a traditional poetic name for the United States. Washington D.C. was founded in 1791. The population of Washington D.C. is 632, 323.

Location of Washington D.C. Washington D.C. is located on the East Coast of the U.S. and borders the states of Maryland and Virginia. The Potomac River is located to the south and west of the district. Washington D.C. is cold and snowy in the winter, the average temperature is about 3.3 degrees and warm and humid in the summer, the average summer temperature is about 26.6 degrees.

The White House All three branches (divisions) of the U.S. government are located in Washington D.C. The executive branch, the President of the U.S., lives and works in the White House. The White House was built in 1800 and renovated many times. The office of the President, called The Oval Office, along with the offices of many members of his staff are located in the West Wing, a new building added in the early 20th century.

Executive Residence The President and his family live in the Executive Residence which is the main building in the group of buildings called The White House Complex. The White House ha six stories (floors), 132 rooms and 35 bathrooms.

The United States Capitol Building The United States Congress, the legislative branch of the government, meets in the Capitol building in Washington D.C. The US Congress consists of two parts, The House of Representatives and the Senate.

United States Supreme Court Building The Supreme Court building is also located in Washington D.C. The US Supreme Court consists of one Chief Justice and 8 associate justices. All of the justices are chosen by the President and approved by the Senate.

The National Mall The National Mall is a national park. The National Mall contains many famous national landmarks, museums and other features. The Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial are located nearby.

The Washington Monument The Washington monument was completed in 1884. It was built in honor of the first U.S. president, George Washington. The monument is the world’s tallest stone structure and the tallest obelisk. It is 169.294 m tall.

The Lincoln Memorial The Lincoln Memorial was built in honor of the 16th president of the U.S., Abraham Lincoln. It is located on the National Mall in Washington D.C. across from the Washington Monument.

The Smithsonian Institution The Smithsonian Institution consists of 19 museums, 9 research centers and a zoo. The Smithsonian Institution Building houses the institution’s office buildings and visitor center. The Smithsonian Institution Building aka “The Castle” National Museum of Natural History

Museums in the Smithsonian Institution There are many different museums in the Smithsonian Institution. Some well-known museums are: The National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The Inauguration In the United States, a new president is elected every four years. When a new president is elected, there is a ceremony to mark the start of the new presidential term. The president takes an oath to serve his country. A president serves a four year term. A president is only allowed to serve 2 terms.

Universities and Art Galleries Many universities are located in Washington D.C. Some well-known (famous) universities are Georgetown, George Washington and Howard University. The National Gallery of Art is located in Washington D.C. It has both European and American paintings and sculptures.
