It was established by the Constitution of the United States to serve as the nation’s capitol. h George Washington, the namesake of Washington, D.C.and the first president of the United States chose the site. h In 1800 the federal government arrived in Washington, D.C. with 131 employees. The centers of all three branches of federal government of the United States are in Washington,D.C.. h The branches are the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. h The District of Columbia was founded on July 16, 1790. The actual construction of the monument began in 1848 but was not completed until 1884. h The moument is the tallest structure in Washington, D.C. h It officially opened October 9, 1888.
