Presentation transcript:

What if ? Imaginary situations or events in the present or future. Talk about how you wish your life were different and why. Discuss how to deal with everyday dilemma’s. Before you begin …

Wishes and Dreams Using could as the past of can and were as a past of be. Main clause + clause with the wish (Subject + wish) + (subject + past form of verb) I wish + I had more free time We wish + we could afford to move. I wish I was taller. What does your mother / father wish for?

Wish in negative statements Subject + wish + subject + didn’t + base form of the verb I wish I didn’t live so far away. Other negatives I wish I hadn’t eaten so much I wish I couldn’t play soccer (strange?) I wish she wouldn’t have said that. (didn’t say that / hadn’t said that.) I wish she weren’t so busy. What don’t you wish for / are annoyed about right now?

Tense Forms. We use past tense forms to talk about wishes for the present: I don’t like this place. I wish I lived somewhere more interesting. These seats are very uncomfortable. I wish we were travelling first class. Everyone wishes they had more free time. John wishes he wasn’t so busy. I wish it wasn’t so cold. Q. What wishes do you have for the present? We use the past perfect to talk about wishes for the past: I wish I had worked harder when I was at school. Mary wishes she had listened to what her mother told her. I wish I hadn’t spent so much money last month. Q. What wishes do you have for the past?

Would Vs. Could Would = definitely do it / higher probability Could = possibility

Would ? We use past tense forms to talk about wishes: We use past tense modals would and could to talk about wishes for the future: I don’t like my work. I wish I could get a better job. That’s a dreadful noise. I wish it would stop. I always have to get home early. I wish my parents would let me stay out later. I wish it would stop raining! I wish I would (X) (Can be used but very difficult)

Would and Could. If + subject + past verb, subject + would / could + base form of the verb. If I had more free time, I would go kayaking. If I lived closer, I could go out more in Hadan. If I weren’t so busy, I’d play more soccer. If I had more free time, I wouldn’t be so stressed. **Note - If I was (used more) / were (more imaginary)

Practice Most of us would like to change something about our lives … I wish I had … I wish I were (was) … I wish I could … I wish I knew … If I had / were / could / knew I wish I had more money. If I had more money I would buy a car. I wish I had more money. If I had more money I could buy a car (or) … Can use this in both sentences but I am trying to make a point here

Hypothetical situations When we introduce hypothetical situations, we often use the following expressions: If. . . Suppose . . . Say . . . Imagine . . . What if . . . If I was … If I were … (used for more imaginary situations) Imagine you were invisible, where would you go? If I were invisible, I would spy on my girlfriend.   Suppose you became the president of your country. What law would you make? If I were the president I would make a law to protect the environment. Say you had a time machine. Where would you go? I would go to see the dinosaurs. What if a genie gave you three wishes? What would you wish for? I would wish for 1,000,000 dollars. If you saw a ghost, what would you do? I would run away.

Imaginary Situations and Events What would you do if + past form of the verb? Yes-No Would you + base form of the verb?
