Cold War Unit Assessment Essay Outline

Snapshot LT: I can organize my thoughts for an essay using a specific format SC: I can complete an outline for Cold War In Class Essay that follows Schaffer Model, has sources and brief blurbs of info  Why: organizing thoughts, Schaffer Model for writing

Essay Outline Choose one of the following questions: Who won the Cold War? Which side of the Cold War (communist vs. capitalist) is better for humanity? Which is a better economic or governmental system? Essay Outline Next class we will be having our unit assessment In-Class Essay No more than source and up to 4 words to describe your sentence You will only be able to use your notes for part of the time during the essay Outline will be turned in with your essay You cannot have the exact same outline as someone else

Intro and Thesis and Topic Sentences Choose one of the following questions – choose one: A. Who won the Cold War? B. Which side of the Cold War (communist vs. capitalist) is better for humanity? Which is a better economic or governmental system? Funnel Intro – Start generally, then build into your specific topic (the Cold War). Let’s practice this a little bit. Thesis – Answer the question directly. Include the topics of your body paragraphs. Pick one of the two prompts – make sure you are focused on the how the Cold War relates to the other words in the prompt. Hint at the topics of your body paragraphs Topic Sentences – Clearly explain the main topic, how does it connect to the topic of your essay, and hint at the CD’s (maybe the OFCD’s) of the paragraph.

CD’s Make your CD’s as accurate as possible – you are only allowed to have up to 5 words on your outline per line, so you need to put the more detailed and precise words in your outline as possible. You also want to study and review your notes so that the words you choose on your outline will help to trigger other words related to them in your memory. I will probably allow you to look at your notes for a couple of minutes during the exam

CM’s – commentary – explain how your CD prove your argument! Make sure that your CM’s explain how your fact either shows how your CD proves that one country won the cold war or how it shows that one side of the Cold War is better for humanity. Standard CM’s – you will have one for each CD. Each CM will explain how its CD proves that one side won the Cold War or is better for humanity. _________________________ (rephrase CD) proves that _________ because ___________________. Advanced CM’s – remember to connect to the topic of your essay – win Cold War/better for humanity. First CM – ____________________________ (first CD) shows/proves/illustrates that _______________________ and _________________________ (second CD) shows/proves/illustrates that ____________________________. Second CM – Taken together, this shows that _____________________________________ (explain the impact that both CD’s have when viewed together – you find a common thread that links your CD’s).

Other Factor – giving the other side of the argument – you MUST do this! In this essay, you are mainly arguing that one side won the Cold War or is better for humanity. However, you also have to argue how others might disagree with the argument. Therefore, you must explain how the other side of the argument. See below for the structure Other Factor CD and CM OF CD – Others might say that ___________________________ (provide a fact and explanation for how the other side wins the Cold War or is better for humanity). OF CM – However, ___________________________ (provide final explanation that proves your original CD’s and CM’s are more correct).
