2. First of all, it’s not that long. You pick one of two choices. 35 minutes. 15% of the score. 5 paragraphs is ok.

3. A few easy steps to get started. 1. Pick the question that you like the best. 2. Take a few minutes to brainstorm; write down everything you know about the topic. 3. Carefully analyze the question before you start writing. What is it really asking you to do? 4. Develop a simple, clear thesis that you can defend with evidence, that also addresses all parts of the question. Oftentimes, they will ask you to support, modify, or refute a historical interpretation. Don’t simply describe or regurgitate- actually take a stand and do what the question is asking you to do. 5. Sketch out a quick outline – make sure the topic sentences in your body paragraphs match the order of the avenues in your intro.

4. Paragraphs Intro: a little background/context, thesis, introduction to the main arguments to be developed in the body paragraphs- the controlling ideas. Body paragraphs: use transitions and make sure the topic sentences are in the same order previewed at the end of your intro paragraph. Brief conclusion: A good spot to briefly address opposing points of view or different interpretations and to engage in synthesis- where you make other connections to more recent history, recurring themes, etc.

5. 4 keys to the rubric Argumentation: develop a thesis that addresses all parts of the question. Use of evidence: support the thesis using specific evidence, clearly linked to the thesis. A targeted historical skill: causation, comparison, continuity, change over time, periodization. Synthesis: pull it all together into a coherent and persuasive essay.
