FLOW OF BLOOD AND VESSELS By: Emily, Allegra, Matt and Greg
Major Veins and Arteries Leading to the heart Superior Vena Cava Inferior Vena Cava Pulmonary Artery Leading from the heart Aorta Descending Aorta Left and Right Pulmonary veins
Major Veins and Arteries On the heart Aorta Right and Left Coronary Artery Coronary vein Small connecting blood vessels Main branch of left coronary artery Coronary Sinus
VEINS Carries blood to the heart More flexible than arteries and walls are thinner Low pressure Larger veins contain valves
ARTERIES Carries blood away from the heart Thick Walls High Blood Pressure
CAPILLARIES Smallest and most numerous of blood vessels Conveys blood between arteries and veins Enters tissue to form capillary beds
Flow of Blood Through Heart Blood returning from the body is low in oxygen. It enters the Right Atrium, passes into the Right Ventricle and is pumped into the lungs, where it is enriched with oxygen. The Oxygen-rich blood then passes back into the Left Atrium and is pumped back into the body via the Left Ventricle.
Flow of Blood Through Body Two types: Systemic System: Carries oxygen-rich blood to all body tissues except lungs, and returns oxygen-poor blood to the Right Atrium. Pulmonary System: Carries Oxygen-poor blood from Right Ventricle to lungs and returns oxygen-rich blood to Left Atrium. FUN FACT!: The total amount of veins equals 60,000 miles… WOW!
