1 HEART Made of cardiac muscle
a. Right atrium – receives blood from whole body b. Left atrium Receives blood from lungs c. Right ventricle – pumps blood to lungs d. Left ventricle Pumps blood to the body

2 Heart Valves – one way and separate the atrium from ventricle to prevent blood backflow The wall separates the two sides of the heart to prevent OXYGENATED blood from mixing with deoxygenated blood.

3 Types of Circulation Coronary – to and from the heart
Pulmonary – to and from lungs Systemic – to and from the body

4 Blood vessels Artery – takes blood away from heart (red)
Vein – takes blood to the heart. (blue) Capillaries – microscopic vessels where arteries and veins meet (purple)

5 Pulmonary Circulation
Pulmonary Vein – Carries blood from the lungs to the heart and is OXYGENATED Pulmonary Artery – Carries blood away from the heart to the lungs but is DEOXYGENATED

6 Superior Vena Cava Aorta Pulmonary Artery Valve Pulmonary Vein Right Atrium Left Atrium Valve Left Ventricle Valve Right Ventricle Inferior Vena Cava (Septum)

7 Diagram the flow of blood
Using the picture, use arrows to show how blood moves through the body, beginning with the superior and inferior vena cavas. Vena cava  Right atrium  Right Ventricle  Pulmonary Artery  Lungs  Pulmonary Vein  Left atrium  Left Ventricle  Aorta  Body

8 Conclusion Questions How is the pulmonary artery different from other arteries in the body? How is the pulmonary vein different from other veins in the body? What are the four chambers of the heart?
