Motivation LFS rotational pattern = f(desired precision quarterly, annual estimates; cost & burden) Other factors: mode, legal requirements, attrition past/other surveys No recommendations on ideal pattern – link between attrition and rotational pattern that can be used for decision making?

Group for purpose of analysis Overview of rotational patterns Rotational pattern Country Group for purpose of analysis 2 in 2 out 2 in BG,DK,EE,HR,IT,LV,LT,MT,PL,RO,(BE) 1 5 in CZ, IE, NL, AT, SK, UK, (LU) 2 6 in EL,ES,FR,CY,HU,PT 8 in SE, (NO) 3 in 1 out 2 in SI, FI 3 in 2 out 2 in (IS)

Average attrition rates 2016, in %; sorted by quarterly rates

Differential attrition Binomial regression, match=1 Regressors: unemployment, age<30, city; interactions Derive attrition rate by category Compare to average attrition: average attrition-category attrition

Link between rotational pattern and attrition? Dependent variable: Average quarterly attrition, average annual attrition, maximum pp difference in av.- factor attrition (q/a) Explanatory variables: Rotational pattern, data collection mode, compulsory participation, EU-SILC attrition(2008-2011 average)

Regression results  cannot confirm impact of rotational pattern on attrition
