A Brief Overview of MOCAN and the WorkWell Missouri Toolkit Educate the Educator WorkWell Missouri Toolkit Webinar August 29, 2017  

Today I will go over a brief description of the Missouri Council for Activity and Nutrition (MOCAN).

What is MOCAN? Coalition Goals Target Audience Recommendations and Actions Current Best Practices Follow the Strategic Plan 2016-2020 Target Audience Coalition Association of state and local agencies, institutions and other coalitions who goal is to prevent obesity and chronic disease through nutrition and physical activity using current evidence-based best practices. Goals The coalition formulates recommendations and actions to achieve out goal through the current best practices. The Strategic Plan is a well-defined document and a revised structure to guide the work of MOCAN members, who are dedicated to changing policies, systems and environments to make healthy eating and physical activity the norm for Missouri residents. Target Audience Health care providers Public health practitioners Others interested

MOCAN Beliefs Obesity and other chronic diseases can be controlled or prevented by: Balancing nutrition and physical activity Employing scientific-based approaches Utilizing many levels of influence The goal can be achieved by consistently maintaining an effort towards blending more nutritional foods with increasing physical activity and using current best practices. Our goal can be achieved through the influence of families, schools, worksites as well as the healthcare industry.

MOCAN Workgroups Communications Strategies Messaging and Marketing There are seven workgroups. Communications Supports the other MOCAN work groups through messaging and marketing directly to the public.

MOCAN Workgroups Food Systems Access Food Systems: Enhances the access to healthy foods through increased opportunities for nutritious food.

MOCAN Workgroups Healthcare Support: Healthcare Professionals Healthcare Systems Healthcare: Supports healthcare professionals and healthcare systems to promote physical activity and nutrition habits.

MOCAN Workgroups Policy Increase public awareness Missouri Farm to Table Bill Policy: Works with communities and other groups to write and try to pass legislation. The Missouri Farm to Table Bill was passed with assistance from several partner groups and the Policy Work Group.

MOCAN Workgroups Physical Activity Environment Active living Support environments that provide opportunities for active living and nutritious food choices.

MOCAN Workgroups Schools and Child Care Assist schools and child care facilities Policies Environments Education Schools and Child Care : Promote healthy food choices and physical activity by providing Best practices Training Model policies Resources

MOCAN Workgroups Worksites Worksite Wellness WorkWell Missouri Toolkit Worksites: The Worksites Work Group Encourages businesses to implement a wellness program for staff during the workday This workgroup developed the WorkWell Missouri Toolkit for Missouri businesses.

At the MOCAN Website, several items are available. Links to social media: Facebook and Twitter ; Membership applications; Workgroups; MOCAN Newsletter and other MOCAN initiatives. MOCAN is currently having a membership drive. Memberships can be either individual or organizational. Our membership drive began on August 21, 2017 and will continue for six weeks. We invite individuals as well as organizations to join. Although the Membership Drive runs through September, anyone can join at any time. The WorkWell Missouri Toolkit can be found at the website listed. The toolkit is designed as a step-by-step guide for employers to introduce employees to healthier lifestyles in the workplace. The WorkWell Missouri Toolkit: Available electronically free of charge by using the link shown. Printed copies are now available for purchase through the University of Missouri Extension.
