Healthy Foods Overview  Must fully implement guidelines by December 31, 2016  All foods offered and served in state agencies: vending machines, cafeterias, on-site retail establishments, meetings & events, and institutional food service  Purchase and promote Washington-grown products whenever practical  Policies based on Washington State Healthy Nutrition Guidelines

4 Your health. Your food. Your choice. DOH’s Role  Provide technical assistance to agencies.  Evaluate the implementation of guidelines across state agencies.

5 Your health. Your food. Your choice. Healthy Nutrition Guidelines  Increase availability of healthier food and beverage options  Based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines  Adapted from existing Guidelines  Executive Order 13-06 directs all state executive agencies to adopt the Guidelines

6 Your health. Your food. Your choice. Guiding Principles More whole grains Less sodium More fresh fruits and vegetables Healthy cooking techniques Less processed foods Smaller portion sizes

7 Your health. Your food. Your choice. Guideline Areas  The Guidelines apply to foods and beverages available through:  Vending  Meetings and events  Cafeterias, cafes, and on-site retails  Institutions (prisons and other sites with custodial populations)

Where Are We Now?  Full implementation of the Guidelines by December 31, 2016.  Providing technical assistance to cafeteria operators and state agencies, as necessary.  Baseline evaluation showed there is room for improvement in implementing the Guidelines.  Follow-up evaluation again later summer/early fall.

11 Your health. Your food. Your choice. Recognition Agencies, worksites and vendors can be recognized for their efforts implementing the Guidelines  Apply by February 1 st each year. Application available online

Recognition  Adopt a healthy nutrition policy.  Communicate policy change to employees.  Conduct workplace assessments.  Implement the Guidelines.  Promote Health Care Authority’s Employee Health Assessment.  Complete at least 4 activities to promote healthy eating in the workplace.

DSB’s Business Enterprise Program Understanding your agency’s relationship with the Department of Services for the Blind (DSB)  DSB holds contracts with many of the blind vendors who operate food service establishments in your buildings  DSB also holds most vending contracts  DSB and its Blind Vendor Committee have adopted policies stating that they will implement the Guidelines
