Understand the role of out of school time in supporting the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model. Understand the nutrition and physical activity standards for out-of-school time organizations. Brainstorm 1-2 small changes your organization could implement that align with the nutrition and physical activity standards. Understand the ways to receive support and technical assistance on implementing your action items!

9 Healthy Eating & Physical Activity (HEPA) Standards for Out-of-School Time
In 2018 the standards were refreshed, resulting in a streamlined, more user-friendly Version 2.0. Version 2.0 includes the five content areas and an accompanying set of 48 standards: Content and Quality Staff Training Social Support Program Support Environmental Support

10 The standards provide a research-based framework for understanding and measuring a program’s healthy eating and physical activity and planning for improvement. Implementing the standards and creating continuous improvement plans in these content areas will improve program quality and youth outcomes.

12 Overview of the HEPA Standards
Content and quality: The program provides foods, beverages, and physical activities that promote lifelong health and reduce the risk of chronic disease. Staff training: All staff members participate in ongoing evidence-informed training and professional development in essential topics on healthy eating and physical activity. Social support: The program creates a culture that supports and promotes healthy eating, physical activity, and positive relationships among staff, children and youth, families, and the community. Program support: Organizational infrastructure, including leadership, management, and budgeting practices, support and promote healthy eating and physical activity. Environmental Support: The program’s physical space supports and promotes healthy eating and physical activity.

13 Example Questions Offer free play with space available for unstructured physical activity or organized physical activities that involve opportunities for all the program’s children and youth. Does not use food as a reward or withhold food or physical activity as punishment. Shares information about healthy eating practices and physical activity through communication channels, including at family and community meetings.

14 Example Questions Offer daily outdoor physical activity.
Offer non-competitive physical activities (e.g., walking, yoga, swimming, dancing). Include a fruit or vegetable at every snack or meal. Fruit and vegetables are fresh, frozen, or dried with no added sweeteners or canned in 100% juice or water.

23 Connect with Louisiana Healthy School Grantee
East Baton Rouge Parish School System, St. Landry Parish School Board, Calcasieu Parish Public Schools, Lafayette Parish School System, Monroe City School System and Tangipahoa Parish School System These six school systems were awarded grant funding from the Louisiana Department of Education to support the implementation of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model through resources, funding and professional development to school districts and schools. This grant includes deliverables for supporting healthier out-of-school time!
