The work due in for today is: FLIP LEARNING TASK: Ensure the planning grid for your extract is complete, as well as the mind map on the Pilgrimage of Grace Continue to work on your folders The work due in for today is:

Using your understanding of the historical context, assess how convincing the arguments in these three extracts are in relation to the reasons for the outbreak of the Pilgrimage of Grace. (30 marks) Last lesson you were asked to analyse and complete a planning grid for one of the three extracts. Today, we are going to start by comparing what we have got and then sharing it with the other people on your table. TASK: First, everyone that has looked at the same extract will need to get together and compare the information they have got to ensure that you have the best answer possible. Move back to your table and then share this information. You should then be able to complete the rest of the grids. Good learning Understand the different rebellions Henry faced Great learning Explain the causes and the impact the rebellions had Even better Evaluate how much of a threat the rebellions were to Henry’s position and complete an exam style question.

How prosperous was England under Henry VIII? Good learning: Understand the different factors that had an impact on English economy Great learning: Explain the positive and negative impact they had on the economy Even better: Evaluate how prosperous England was during this period Key Words: How did English society and economy change and with what effects?

What different factors had an impact on the English economy? There were many different things that contributed towards the English economy during this period such as trade, exploration, enclosures and the population and on the whole there are clear signs of both prosperity and depression. Task: I would like you to create a guide on the economy during the reign of Henry VIII and the impact different factors had on it. You will need to look at the following: Trade and exploration (pg. 109-111) Enclosures (pg. 112) Population (pg. 112) You will need to outline what each one was and then explain the impact it would have on the English economy, both positive and negative. Each point should go across a double page and there should also be a front cover and the back cover should be left blank. Overall, which do you think had the biggest impact on English economy during this period? Good learning Understand the different factors that had an impact on the English economy Great learning Explain the positive and negative impact they had on the economy Even better Evaluate how prosperous England was during this period

Trade and Exploration Positive Negative Trade: The volume of trade increased during the first half of the 16th Century = rise in cloth exports There were significant increases in the export of woollen cloth, hides and tin Increased import of wine = spending power of the more prosperous increased Places like Southampton boomed due to trade with Venice (though was short lived) Increase in cheaper fabrics such as kersey There were some profits to be made as the woollen industry grew in order to keep pace with the increased demand, especially if you were a rich and entrepreneurial clothier The areas which saw the greatest growth in the cloth industry were the West Riding of Yorkshire, East Anglia and parts of the West County There was also growth in the mining industries, such as Cornish tin, lead, coal and iron ore, which much focused in the northeast of England. Decline in the market for raw wool Increased number of cloth routed through London = negative impact on ports like Bristol, Hull and Boston and therefore the provincial traders found it harder to compete with their London rivals. Much of the profits didn’t find their way back to England as much of the trade went through foreign hands first. Work in the cloth industry was not always secure and could lead to poverty Exploration: - Henry VIII was uninterested in exploration and therefore made no attempts to build on earlier achievements. Therefore, there were very few new links established during this time.

Enclosures Positive Negative Wolsey launched an enclosure commission to assess the scale of the problem and proceedings launched against 188 defendants who were found guilty of enclosing illegally. Very little damage as a result of enclosures happened under this period, most had happened before 1485. Further legislation was enforced in 1534 to limit sheep ownership and engrossing (though had limited results also) Had little impact Caused a moral problem as the poor had to leave their homes Legislation and trying to deal with the problem was often ineffective

Population Positive Negative Wealthier farmers and landowners benefited as the income from farming rose and still not having to raise the price of wages Growing class of substantial farmers who were able to respond to the changing market conditions and who enjoyed much better material conditions as a result. John Guy argued ‘agricultural improvement prompted economic growth at the cost of peasant distress; increased production generated prosperity for landlords and impoverishment for wage-earners’ Increase in population – strain on food supplies and therefore difficult to meet demand Wages remained stagnant due to plentiful supply of cheap labour ‘Richer became richer and the poorer became poorer– Society becoming more separated into the rich and the poor and the poor was blamed for their own situation because of idleness = tougher measures against vagrancy and begging.

Overall, how prosperous was the economy under Henry VIII? John Guy has argued that, ‘England was economically healthier, more expansive and more optimistic under the Tudors’, but to what extent is this actually the case? Task: Using the information on page 111-112 I would like you to answer the above question as a mini essay. You should do the following: Have an introduction – define prosperous, criteria and judgement 1xPEEL paragraph in support 1xPEEL paragraph against Conclusion CHALLENGE: out of the points you have just looked out, which would you say has the biggest impact on the economy and why? Good learning Understand the different factors that had an impact on the English economy Great learning Explain the positive and negative impact they had on the economy Even better Evaluate how prosperous England was during this period Now swap your answer with your partner and comment on what you have done well and what you still need to work on.
