What do Christians say the Holy Spirit is like? KEY QUESTION EYFS Learning Objectives Learning Outcomes What do Christians say the Holy Spirit is like? The children will learn:   That the Holy Spirit is like the wind. That Pentecost is the church’s birthday. That the Holy Spirit is received as a gift. By the end of this unit: Emerging (Some children) I can say something about the Holy Spirit. I can begin to retell some of the story of Pentecost. Expected (All children) I can say what the Holy Spirit is like. I can retell the story of Pentecost. Exceeding (Few children) I know the Holy Spirit is a gift. I can say how people talk about the Holy Spirit.

Step 1: Exploring the properties of the wind inside and outside: blowing bubbles, using spinners, making kites.

Exploring the story : Teddy Horsley and the Windy Day’ by Leslie J. Francis. What happens to Teddy on a windy day? Collect ideas from this story about the wind. Follow up in PE

Step 2: Introducing the idea of the Holy Spirit Discussing: Have you ever heard anyone talk about the Holy Spirit this year in school? Class mind map together ideas from collective worship, church involvements etc Exploring the Pentecost Bible story. Explain this is a bible story which has wind in it. Ask: What happened to the disciples in the story? Discuss. Acts 2:1-13. Example ideas from discussion above next few slides.

Step 3 Exploring the story further – art, drama. Extend children’s ideas. What would you do differently? Emerging Outcomes (Some children) I can say something about the Holy Spirit. I can begin to retell some of the story of Pentecost.

Towards Expected Outcomes (All children) I can say what the Holy Spirit is like. I can retell the story of Pentecost. Step 3: How would you now deepen the children’s learning? What would you do next? Examples: Exploring in more depth exactly what happened that day. Thinking about what each character felt, thought and said about the events at different parts of the day. Think. Pair. Share. What do you think is the most important part of the story and why?

Step 4: Exploring letting balloons go with air in them to see what happens. Making Links You can see the air you can feel it but not see it, you can hear it but not see it just like the Holy Spirit. Explain the Holy Spirit was a gift from God.
