The idea of the Trinity is that there are three ‘persons’, all of which are God. Just as a clover leaf is made up of what seems to be three separate leaves, the one God is made up of three ‘persons’ – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. 3 Trinity Key terms Copy down one of the definitions below:
The belief that there are 3 persons in the One God – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit – and they are separate but one That there are 3 persons in the One God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit The belief that God is 3 – Father, Son and Holy Spirit Trinity Grade 8-9: analyse and evaluate what may seem to be conflicting ideas about God Grade 6-7: explain the concepts of the Oneness of God and the Trinity Grade 4-5: describe the Trinity and begin to understand the concept of the Oneness of God Grade 2-3: identify what the three parts of the Trinity are

4 The Trinity Another way to think about this is to consider ice, water and steam. These are different forms of the same thing (H2O). The Trinity is similar: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit have different forms and are experience in different ways even though they are all the same God. The Trinity describes all three of the following at once: There is only one God Each person of the Trinity is fully God The persons of the Trinity are not the same

5 God as the Trinity In the Bible Jesus is referred to as the Son of God (Hebrews 1:3) In Mark 1, Jesus is baptised by his cousin John. All three are present – God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit (as a dove). In Matthew 28 Jesus tells his disciples to ‘baptise in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit’. Click picture for hyperlink
