10 This happens at the very start of Mass with the Sign of the Cross and a brief explanation by the priest about the theme of the Mass. Penitence means sorrow for sin, so the penitential rite asks for God’s forgiveness. We say this at the beginning of Mass before the Liturgy of the Word so that we can celebrate with a clear conscience and in a good relationship with God. This is really the first half of the Mass. It is when we hear the Word of God and it is when Jesus is present with us in the readings. This part includes: Gloria Old Testament Reading Psalm New Testament Reading and.. The Gospel, which shows how Jesus fulfilled the scripture and is the Good News for us all. After this is the homily, in which the priest explains all the readings we have listened to. This statement of belief is said after the homily. It is a summary of what Catholics believe about: God the Father Jesus Christ, the Son of God The Holy Spirit The Church After the Creed, these special prayers are said. They are a series of prayers asking for God’s help with the needs of the Church, the local community and the World. The Liturgy of the Word ends with these prayers. This is the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This is a procession when people of the parish bring forward gifts of bread and wine and other offerings (usually the collection money) to the altar. These prayers are said over the gifts of bread and wine. At the heart of the prayer is the consecration of the gifts. This is when the bread and wine becomes the body and blood of Christ. The most important prayer we are taught is said after the bread and wine becomes the Body and Blood. It is said to ask for the food of eternal life and for forgiveness. To show we are ready to receive the Eucharist, we offer this sign to each other. This shows we are friends with each other and in communion with God. Once we have given the Sign of Peace we are ready to receive the body and blood of Christ. This emphasises that the Mass is the food and drink of eternal life. We are given the final command to ‘Go in peace to love and serve the Lord’. This means that now we have received the Body and Blood we should go out into our communities and act out this command.

11 Project Love and Sacrifice
Explain what a sacrifice is. Religious Sacrifice Explain why the Jews gave sacrifices to God. The First Passover Describe the Passover and explain why this was important to Jews. (God had remained true to the covenant - the blood over the door is important as it a symbol of how they were saved.) The Last Supper Explain what happened at the Last Supper. How did Jesus describe himself as a Sacrifice (what do Christians believe that he was sacrificing himself for?)
