Working with Postgraduates Conversion Courses © AGCAS

Types of programmes Examples include: IT Law Teaching Business Psychology © AGCAS

Characteristics of Cohort Aiming to make a change of career/career direction. Could be any age and have differing levels of work experience. Likely to have very high expectations of the course. Might not all be as realistic or career focused as may be expected despite the vocational nature of the conversion course. Some could be experiencing a very steep learning curve if they’ve not had exposure to the subject matter before. © AGCAS

Expectations Very high in terms of what the course will give them. Usually aiming for a career in the sector relating to the course. Potential for complacency i.e. think that being on a vocational course is enough to get them a good job so might not be aware of the level of effort they will have to put in to make it happen. © AGCAS

Suggested Approaches Being clear from the outset about the level of self-efficacy they will have to expend on the job search. Case studies of previous successful students perhaps offering realistic advice about job search. Guest speakers – especially previous students. Focus on how to build a network in the new area and job search strategies. Examples of CVs, covering letters, applications – all bespoke to the course area. Mentoring – using course alumni. Encouraging students to leverage/research the alumni network. © AGCAS
