2 Introduction to Support for Schools
A manifesto commitment in 2015 (The Gatsby Benchmarks) brought in to effect. Ian Duncan Smith had the idea to put JCP advisers in schools. Intended to assist schools in England with a tailored and bespoke service complimenting the provision already available. To provide high quality, independent & impartial careers advice for school years 8 – 13 (12 – 18 years) This offer is demand-led and is free to access. Explain about Careers Enterprise Company/ Co-Ordinator – Mel Carr. Setting up Enterprise Advisers who will work with schools on a 121 basis by conducting an initial diagnostic and support the school in identifying priority areas for support. This is where JCP come in by offering expert knowledge of employers/providers etc So far, 22 schools & colleges have signed up in Cumbria – they may need some help, little help or no help – explain may be just 1 day, 1 week or continual.

3 How will this role ‘Add Value’ to what’s already available
We know there is a wealth of support out there and do not want to duplicate or replace it, we want to compliment it. We want our offer to be as flexible and responsive as possible, complementing what schools already have in place. Provide advice on routes into Traineeships & Apprenticeships Help to source and advise on work experience opportunities Provide advice on the local labour market (including soft skills that employers value) Many young people may drift into benefit at the age of 18, and for those who don’t find a route into work quickly, the drift into benefit dependency can have a serious long-term detrimental effect. Research indicates that young people can experience a relative reduction in earnings lasting for 20 years following unemployment in their youth. Most will eventually make the transition into work, training or further study, but what a waste of potential in the meantime! How much better if JCP could help schools prevent them becoming NEET in the first place.

4 What support can we offer?
JCP Support can look different in each participating school Help with completing the job application process, CVs, mock interviews Attending Careers/Jobs Fairs & giving information & advice – I am NOT allowed to give guidance Labour market up-skilling for pupils and/or teachers/parents Arranging employer/provider talks at assemblies Group sessions Our extensive network of employers, JCP advisers and experience of helping school leavers who have drifted into worklessness has given us a perspective that adds value and complements the current delivery of careers support.

5 What are the workshops we offer?
I have devised & written several Power Points including: Traineeships Apprenticeships What is a cover letter & how to write one Completing application forms CV – What is it? How do I write one? Where do I start? Social Media –Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn/ – what is it – how do I use it to find work? Self Awareness – Why is this important? Interview Techniques Employability Skills Labour Market Information JCP Skills2Succeed information Very much a ‘Work in Progress’

6 What’s happening at the moment?
I have engaged with 30+ schools within Nottingham – mock interviews, CV sessions, application forms, self awareness workshops, LMI workshops, Apprenticeships, Work Experience placements, Careers Fairs etc I have written a generic LMI presentation with a local quiz along with specific area information on growth sectors in each area to use in presentations looking also at skills shortages. I have networked with local employers to persuade them to support me to help prevent students from becoming NEET either by involvement in mock interviews or work experience placements. Working together with HMRC to help deliver Tax Facts Resource. Lots of appointments with providers – to see what they have on offer. Meetings with employers to see if they can help etc. Just finding out as much relevant info as we can – Steep learning curve as I know Carlisle & Sharon knows Workington & Whitehaven. We cover the whole of Cumbria between us!
