Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things
TOPIC: Cells AIM: Explain the cell theory and the scientists how helped develop it. Do Now: A new idea that is tested in a scientific experiment is known.
CELL THEORY NOTES.
Cell Theory. Cell theory states: 1.All living organisms are composed of cells. They may be unicellular or multicellular. Unicellular = single cell organisms.
Robert Hooke - uses the word “cells” to describe cork. Anton van Leeuwenhoek - observes tiny microorganisms with his microscope.

Cell Theory And its exceptions. Background Invention of microscope by van Leeuwenhoek 1665 – Robert Hooke – Viewed cork – saw cell walls – Named them.
Anton van Leeuwenhoek When: mid 1600’s Discovery: Credited with inventing the light microscope – tiny microscope with a glass bead Observations: observed.

Cell Theory STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF CELLS:. Discovery of Cells Cells were discovered with the invention of the MICROSCOPE in the early 17 th century.
The Cell. History and Early Contributions Robert Hooke (1665) – first to see cells  Used an early microscope to look at a slice of cork and saw tiny.
The Cell Theory – a timeline Late 1500’s: -first lenses used in Europe -used to determine cloth quality (weave and precision) -combos of lenses gave better.

Microscopes Provide the Windows to the World of the Cell The Cell Theory Microscopes Provide the Windows to the World of the Cell

The Men Anton Van Leeuwenhoek (1600’s) Credit for the first microscope Looked at pond water and saw “wee beasties”

Robert Hooke Observed plant stems, wood, and cork (1600’s) Saw all the tiny chambers and called them CELLS What cell part did Hooke observe? Cell Wall

Robert Brown (1833) Observed that cells had a dark structure within plant cells Brown observed the nucleus

Matthias Schleiden (1838) Stated that all plants are made of Cells Made many observations of plants around the area

Theodor Schwann (1839) Stated that all animals are made of Cells Observed many animal tissues

Rudolf Virchow (1855) Stated that all cells come from pre-existing cells Cells arise from the division of pre-existing cells

The Cell Theory All living things are composed of cells Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things All cells come from pre-existing cells

Exceptions to the Cell Theory Viruses – are not cellular Mitochondria and chloroplast – each contain genetic material and can reproduce
