1 Cell Theory SC.912.L.14.1

2 Essential Question Why do scientists believe that all living things are made of cells?

3 What does this have to do with science?

4 Scientists leading to Cell Theory
1665 Robert Hooke 1674 Anton van Leeuwenhoek 1838 Schleiden 1839 Schwann 1855 Virchow While these scientists were working they shared their ideas with others. Other scientists were able to perform experiments that confirmed their conclusions.

5 Hooke Used a simple microscope
Saw little chambers in a piece of cork and called them “cells”.

6 Leeuwenhoek Created over 500 microscopes
Described seeing “animalcules”

7 Schleiden and Schwann Concluded that all plants and animals were made of cells.

8 Virchow Concluded that new cells could be produced only from the division of existing cells.

9 The conclusion The cell theory states:
All living things are composed of cells. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. New cells are produced from existing cells.

10 Exit Question. Why do you think the concept of cells was not studied before Hooke?
