Information for parents. Key Stage 1 SATs 2017 Information for parents.

What are SATs? When are they? Who sits the tests? Who marks them? What happens with the test results? How are they reported to parents?

What are SATs? National curriculum tests taken by Year 2 pupils at the end of Key Stage 1 Provide info about how your child is progressing, compared to children the same age nationally They are not qualifications and don’t affect your child’s future options in school They form part of teacher assessment to give your child an overall judgement for their performance at the end of KS1

2017 SATs Week beginning 15th May English reading: 2 papers- a short text and questions; a longer text with separate questions Mathematics: 2 papers- arithmetic; mathematical reasoning Optional: English grammar, punctuation and spelling test: 2 papers- spelling; punctuation and grammar (including vocabulary)

2017 SATs Writing: no test. This is teacher assessment only, using the assessment grids with the standards outlined on them. Working towards/Working at/Working at greater depth against national standards Science: no test, teacher assessed. Either meet the national standard or do not. Tests are marked by the class teachers We can not open them until the morning of the test but can administer them to groups of pupils if we want to.

Do all children have to take the tests? Pupils do not need to take the tests if they have not completed the KS1 programme of study Are working below the overall standard of the tests Are unable to participate even when using suitable access arrangements (e.g. scribe, rest breaks) Parents will be informed if the decision is made to not enter a child for the tests

How are tests reported? Pupils raw scores are converted into scaled scores published by the Government in early June Scaled scores for pupils are reported to the LA, completed and submitted by 29th June Pupils will be given a teacher assessment for reading, writing and mathematics. Pupils either achieve Working towards, Working at or Working at greater depth against national standards. Science: achieved national standard or did not achieve Some SEND pupils who are performing below the national standards will be awarded pre-key stage standards, called Foundations for the expected standard

Do you have any questions? Opportunity to look at the 2016 test papers: There are only two papers – a practice paper and the actual 2016 test paper in maths and reading, so please do not try to download them as we use them to assess pupil attainment before May.
