1 KS2 SATS 2019

2 What does SATs stand for?
Statutory Assessment Tests – externally set and marked tests. Your child’s marks are used in conjunction with teacher assessments to give a broad picture of attainment. The results are passed on to your child’s secondary school. SATs results also measure the school’s performance.

3 Key Stage 2 SATS All children across the country will be completing their Key Stage 2 SATs the week beginning 13th May 2019. Key stage 2 Date Activity Monday 13 May English grammar, punctuation and spelling papers 1 and 2 Tuesday 14 May English reading Wednesday 15 May Mathematics papers 1 and 2 Thursday 16 May Mathematics paper 3

4 Marking and reporting SATs papers are externally marked and test scores are reported as scaled scores. Each pupil’s raw test score will be converted into a score on the scale ranging from 80 to 120 with 100 being the national standard. A child who achieves a score of 100, will be judged to have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests and therefore working at ‘age related expectations’. For Reading, Mathematics and SPaG pupils will be grouped into 2 categories: working at the expected standard (100 – 120) or has not met the standard (99 or below) Results will be given to parents in July along with their child’s annual report.

5 Writing assessment There is no writing SATs test
Writing assessments will be formed from judgements made by the teacher, looking at evidence from writing collected over the course of the year We will moderate writing assessments with other professionals to make sure there is a consistent standard across the country. Final judgements will be reported to parents at the same time as the other assessment results. For Writing pupils will be grouped into 4 categories: working towards the expected standard working at the expected standard working at greater depth within the expected standard or a category for pupils who do not meet the ‘working towards the expected standard’

6 Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar test
A spelling test is administered containing 20 words, which lasts approximately 15 minutes. A separate test is given on grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. This test lasts for 45 minutes and requires short answer questions including some multiple choice. Marks for these two tests are added together to give a total for grammar, punctuation and spelling.

10 Reading The reading test consists of a single test paper with three unrelated reading texts. Children are given 60 minutes in total to read the texts and answer the questions. A total of 50 marks are available. During the reading paper, children will be expected to answer comprehension questions; inference and deduction skills are thoroughly tested. Some questions are multiple choice; others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation.

11 Example questions:

12 Maths Arithmetic Paper 1 30 minutes
The mathematics tests have undergone the biggest change in recent years. There are 3 papers. Arithmetic Paper 1 30 minutes This covers calculation methods for all 4 operations, including fractions, percentages and decimals. Questions gradually increase in difficulty. Not all children will be expected to access some of the more difficult questions later in the paper. Reasoning Paper 2 and Reasoning Paper 3 40 minutes each These papers cover problem solving and reasoning. Pupils will still require calculation skills but will need to answer questions in context and decide what is required to find a solution.

16 How to help your child: Help with the organising of homework (including spellings and mental arithmetic) and support their reading for pleasure activities. Remind them they are not to feel worried or pressured about SATS. All we ask is that they try their best, SATS should not be causing anxiety. Do give lots of praise and encouragement, we do! Encourage them to have early nights and a good breakfast every day. During SATs week we will provide a shared breakfast at school on the day of each test. Help your child to have the best possible attendance at school. Please speak to any of us if you have questions or concerns.
