Prostate Cancer Awareness

What Is Prostate Cancer? Prostate cancer is a disease that only affects men. Cancer begins to grow in the prostate gland, which is located in the male reproductive system. This disease often shows no symptoms until it is in an advanced stage. Prostate cancer that is found in its early stages can be treated and greatly increases the chance for survival.

Common Causes Of Prostate Cancer Age The older you become, the higher the risk for developing prostate cancer. This disease is uncommon before the age of 45 but is more likely after the age of 50. Diet A diet high in red meat, as well as eating foods high in saturated fat can increase the risk of developing prostate cancer. Lack of exercise Hormones High levels of testosterone increase the risk. Genetics

How Can I Be Tested? Digital Rectal Exam PSA Blood Test A doctor feels through the prostate through the rectum, to find large lumpy areas known as nodules. This blood test is used to detect a prostate-specific antigen in the blood. PSA levels in blood are higher if prostate cancer is present.

Ways to Prevent it Prevention Eat more low-fat, high fiber food with omega 3 fatty acids Being physically active and staying at a healthy body weight Get sunshine daily Cut back on red meats such as processed meats and hot dogs Moderation is key
