Agenda I Do: Vocabulary/ Sample Problems We Do: Story Reading You Do: Checkpoint Problems Review Summary/ Feedback/ Questions

Gravity Practice 1 What is the acceleration due to gravity at a location where a 15.0 kilogram mass weighs 45.0 Newtons? a. 675 m/s2 b. 9.81 m/s2 c. 3.00 m/s2 d. 0.333 m/s2

Gravity Practice 2 A 1200 kg space vehicle travels at 4.8 meters per second along the level surface of Mars. If the magnitude of the gravitational field strength on the surface of Mars is 3.7 Newtons per kilogram, the magnitude of the normal force acting on the vehicle is: a. 320 N b. 930 N c. 4400 N d. 5800 N

Work and Gravity 1 Find the work required to lift a 2kg object from 0.5 meters to 2.5 meters off the ground. Part 1: The force needed to overcome gravity (F=mg) Part 2: The work needed to lift the object (W=Fd)

Work and Gravity 2 Find gravity’s effect on the work required to move a 5kg object dropped from a height of 10 meters I. Free Body Diagram I. Description of energies involved II. Anything that could make this “less work”

Work and Gravity 3 In an arc, a 1kg chair is thrown a distance 30 degrees north for 10 meters with an applied force of 20N. Free Body Diagram and Work Calculation II.      Description of energies involved III.      Anything that could make this “more work”

WARM-UP: WEEKLY REFLECTION: NEW Behavior Log is filled out for 10/17/16 Copied Objective, HW into assignment list WEEKLY REFLECTION: Is there something that happened this week that you wish went differently? Describe it. If you could do it again, what would you do? What will you do in the future to prevent that trouble again? Magic Number is 9… Expectations rise!

Connections Friday HW: Tell us about an object around the house that uses one of the 6 simple machines and how it makes Work (Fxd) easier OR Tell us about a time you encountered gravity or friction and “it won”

Mantra - Your Turn! Today is a great day for science because: Science is power. We are powerful because: We always make a difference.

Goals * State the Objective(s)/Standard (s)- RI 7.3; W2; Sci 2c * State the Purpose (Big Idea) - SWBAT explain how movement is related to energy and work, and apply problem solving skills to real life situations as told in a pick-your-path-story. SWBAT Compare/Contrast and Apply techniques to measure the forces and effects of gravity and friction while analyzing how individuals, events, and ideas interact in real life situations as told in a pick-your-path-story.

Agenda I Do: Data Table Set-Up/ Roles/ Expectations We Do: Data Tables/ Graph Checks You Do: Analysis Problems Summary/ Feedback/ Questions

Story Check-in: What main ideas have been in the story so far? How can we connect these main ideas? Update what is currently happening in the story… Who is battling who, where, when, how? What new topics enter the story today that you are familiar with?

Friction Practice A projectile launched at an angle of 45 degrees above the horizontal travels through the air. Compared to the projectile’s theoretical path with no air friction, the actual trajectory of the projectile with air friction is: a. flatter and shorter distance b. flatter and longer distance c. higher and shorter distance d. higher and longer distance

Friction Make a list of objects that might cause the most friction Make another list of objects or surfaces that might have the least amount of resistance through friction. Let's talk incline planes...

Plane Prep: If an incline plane is steeper, the amount of work required to pull an object up the slope will: Increase Decrease Stay the Same It depends on the size or weight of the object

It's All Uphill Tutorial/Worksheet Background: In this Interactive, you will analyze the motion of a cart being pulled up an inclined plane at a constant speed. The angle of the incline can be modified by 10° increments between the values of 30° and 90°. Three different masses can be selected – 2.0 kg, 3.0 kg, and 4.0 kg. In each simulation, the cart is pulled to the same height – 1.0 meter above the original starting position. For each simulation, the force that must be applied is reported on the screen. The displacement of the cart can be measured using the cm-ruler that is displayed for each trial. Purpose: To determine the effect of the angle of an inclined plane upon the amount of force and the amount of work done when pulling a cart up an inclined plane at a constant speed and to the same height.

It's All Uphill Tutorial/Worksheet Work with your group-mates Fill out the charts and answer questions as we go along Make sure everyone's names are included

5. Assuming the starting height is 0m, calculate the potential energy of the cart after it has been elevated to a height of 1m above the starting location. Please Show Your Work. U=mgh 6. How does your answer to question #5 compare to the work values in the data table?

Last Items/ Questions Think about your progress and effort in Units 1 & 2 for Reflection/Celebration once grades are back Gravity and some form of friction act in all situations to help objects fall and slow down Report Card Pick-Up/ Conferences Thurs. 4-6pm Need Physics help or want to talk about your grades?
